Performance by Dorine Mokha, followed by a conversation with Lisette Lagnado
In Entre deux (June 2013), Dorine Mokha talks about turning down a legal career in order to dance. In Entre deux II : Lettre à Guz (October 2015), he addresses an open letter to the perpetrator and accomplices of one of the attempted rapes of which he had been the victim. In his recent solo Entre deux : Testament (January 2020), he reacts to the difficult and depressive path that had led him toward accepting his own sexuality and his fight against homophobia.
For his first public performance in Berlin, Dorine Mokha revisits this trilogy. He offers a selection from it, a multidisciplinary performance staged for the first time and comprising several extracts from choreographies, texts, videos, and songs taken from these three works that enabled him to define and refine his artistic approach.
3, 2, 1…Entre deux ! sees the artist explore his concerns about a possible dialogue both with himself and society. What does it mean to be “in-between”? Who am I? What should I choose? What does the society of which I’m a part want? Why? Who has the grip on power? Do I have the right to speak? Do I have a voice? What can I do with it? A voice? What can I do with it? Without pretending to offer definitive answers, Dorine Mokha seeks to take control of his present and to afford himself the power to reinvent his future.
Born in November 1989 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dorine Mokha is a Congolese dancer, choreographer, and author. He is artistic co-director of the ART’gument Project in Lubumbashi and associate artist at Studios Kabako in Kisangani. With a fully-fledged artistic presence in the international arena, his resumé includes four creative works (Reclus, Entre deux, Entre deux II : Lettre à Guz, and Entre deux : Testament), as well as multiple international collaborations with established artists such as Désiré Davids, Elia Rediger, and Faustin Linyekula. He has written texts on dance and theatre, and has contributed to literary reviews.
Dorine Mokha received a scholarship from the Akademie Schloss Solitude to study from 2014 to 2015. He received a prize at the Institut français’s triennale Danse l’Afrique danse ! (2017). He was a jury member at the Zürcher Theater Spektakel (2017); a participant at the Séminaire en Avignon at the 2017 Avignon Festival and at the 2018 International Coproduction Fund at the Goethe Institute; and an artist in residence at Pro Helvetia Johannesburg (2019). Dorine Mokha holds a Masters in Economic and Social Law from the University of Kisangani (2013).
