After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the GDR’s Palast der Republik [Palace of the Republic] was slowly demolished (2006–2008) in order to rebuild the original Berlin Castle, despite the resistance of those who felt it would be an erasure of GDR history. The new Berlin Castle will house the Humboldt Forum, bringing together several collections of non-European history, which has sparked a debate around issues of restitution. The escalating controversy around the project led to resignations from its advisory panel and international press coverage. This image was published in a New York Times article from October 2018, quoting several protesters: “This will be a memorial to the colonial era.” One of the three founding directors is also quoted, responding to the criticism by defining the project as a “psychogram of Germany.”
